The Ultimate List of Costume Ideas

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is one of the only times adults can dress up at Disney. So if you’re going to do it, go all in.

Whether you’re flying solo, coordinating with your kids, or rolling deep with a group, this list is packed with ideas to help you show up looking magical, spooky, or straight-up iconic.

The Rules (Yes, Disney Has Them)

Before you start assembling your glitter cape or full-body inflatable ride-on ghost… let’s talk guidelines. Disney has costume policies in place, even during the party:

  • Costumes must be family-friendly. No weapons, gore, or adult-only themes.
  • No masks for guests over 14. Face paint is okay, but your whole face can’t be covered.
  • No full-length capes that touch the ground
  • Props must be soft or non-functional. Lightsabers = yes. Metal swords = no.
  • You can dress like a character, but you can’t pretend to be them. (No signing autographs or acting like a cast member.)

Always check the official Disney costume guidelines before finalizing your look - they update it occasionally.

Tips for Wearing Your Costume to MNSSHP (and Surviving the Night)

  • It’s hot. Really hot.
    • Skip the full fur coat for that Cruella costume. Breathable fabrics like cotton, mesh, and athletic wear disguised as costume pieces will keep you much more comfortable throughout the night.
  • Bring a change of clothes.
    • A lot of people take their photos early in the evening and then switch into something cooler. Show up in costume, get the pics, and then change into something that isn’t drenched in sweat and ride-friendly. Totally optional though, we don’t do this, but I do hear this as a common thing people do.
  • Don’t mess around with your shoes.
    • I know the fit has to be perfect, but don’t sacrifice your feet for it. You’ll likely walk 20,000 steps or more. Go for something broken-in and supportive - even if that means working sneakers into your look.
  • Bring a portable fan.
  • Upgrade your candy bag.
    • The party gives you a treat bag, but it fills up fast. If trick-or-treating is a priority, bring a larger bag (like a lightweight backpack) to dump candy into and keep going without overflow drama. Bonus points if you can integrate it with your costume!
  • Hydrate and eat a real meal.
    • Okay now I’m really going to sound like a mom. But it’s true! Candy is fun, but it won’t carry you through the night. Make sure you’re drinking water and eating something substantial before the sugar crash hits mid-parade. You can get free ice cold water from the two pretzel carts on either side of the castle, the pretzel cart next to Aloha Isle Refreshments, Lunching Pad, and Cosmic Rays to name a few.

Costume Ready, Now What?

Once you’ve nailed your look, don’t stop there.

The party flies by, and trying to wing it usually ends with missed shows, skipped candy trails, and a whole lot of “Wait, where are we supposed to be right now?”

That’s where the Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Planner comes in.

It’s a digital Notion template that helps you prioritize what matters before the party, so you can focus on having fun once you’re there.

Now go forth and haunt Main Street in style.
