The Secret Advantage of Party Days at Magic Kingdom (That No One Talks About)

If you’re heading to the parks this fall or early winter, you’re right in the thick of “party season” at Disney. Between Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, planning a trip around these special-event nights gets a little trickier (but also offers some smart opportunities).
Here are two reasons why planning around these party days is a necessity:
Why you SHOULD NOT go to Magic Kingdom on party days
On nights when a party is scheduled, Magic Kingdom closes to regular park-ticket guests at 6 PM, because the party begins at 7 PM for those with the separate event ticket.
What that means: if you use a standard day ticket on a party day, you’ll end up with a shortened park day - no evening hours like a “normal” day.
Also: The usual nighttime shows, Happily Ever After Fireworks show or the DisneyStarlight: Dream the Night Away parade, will not be available for regular guests on those nights.
If the these shows at Magic Kingdom are a priority for your trip, you’ll want to avoid a party night for your Magic Kingdom park day.
Why you SHOULD go to Magic Kingdom on party days
Now here’s the flip side.
Because party-goers can only enter from 4 PM onward, and many regular park guests know the day ends early, the park tends to be noticeably lighter earlier in the day.
For rides, character meet-and-greets, food lines - everything - wait times are often lower (especially in the morning).
So if your priority is maximizing ride time and fewer crowds, and you’re ok missing the big evening shows, going to Magic Kingdom on a party day can be the right move for you.
Party Ticket vs. Park Ticket - What’s the Difference?
Okay, let’s get this answered once and for all because this trips up everyone.
Here’s the deal:
Party Tickets
- Party tickets are totally separate from regular park tickets and don’t require a park reservation.
- Guests with tickets to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party or Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party can enter Magic Kingdom as early as 4 PM, even though the party itself doesn’t officially kick off until 7 PM.
- Once the clock strikes 6 PM, Cast Members begin checking for party wristbands - meaning anyone without one gets gently (but firmly) escorted out. From there, the park transforms into a party-only experience.
- Both parties include exclusive entertainment. Think themed fireworks, limited-time parades, rare character meet-and-greets, specialty snacks, and unique merchandise you won’t find during regular park hours.
Regular Park Ticket
- Regular park day tickets allow you to go to Magic Kingdom whenever throughout the day and requires a reservation.
- You need a regular park ticket to take advantage of Early Entry if you’re staying at a Disney Resort.
- These tickets do not include access to either the Halloween or Christmas party. On party days, regular park guests are asked to leave by 6 PM when the park closes for the event.

Here’s the thing, Disney doesn’t spell this out anywhere.

Either way, that’s next-level planning and exactly the kind of curiosity Walt would approve of.
